There may not be a bigger celebrity in the music world than pop sensation Katy Perry. But what many don’t know is the impact Katy has had on the autism community over the past several years.
“I will never forget last night. It was the most important moment thus far of what I do.”
But it doesn’t stop there. We’ve seen countless videos of self-advocates and parents sharing covers of Katy’s songs (like her #1 hit “Roar”) in order to spread autism awareness. “Roar” reminds people that they are going to hear us roar. They are going to hear us educate and spread autism awareness.
For example, Jack, an eight-year-old non-verbal boy with autism, became a viral sensation when he was able to sing the song “Roar” to his mom’s iPhone. The video now has over 600,000 views on YouTube.
Katy again helped the cause when she offered several members of our team at Autism Speaks tickets to see a special screening of her documentary “A Piece of Me.” This documentary resonated with many in our community, as the puzzle piece is one of our trademark symbols around the world. Almost a year later, during Katy’s Prism World Tour, she also donated a portion of the proceeds to Autism Speaks! Thank you Katy Perry for providing such powerful music that inspires everyone!
