Leonardo Sanchez‘s parents were supposed to celebrate his second birthday on Saturday, but instead they’ll be mourning after what’s being called a “very tragic, sad accident” at his daycare center.
According to media reports, the boy was playing with other children at West Jordan Child Center in a suburb of Salt Lake City late last week when he crawled under a beanbag chair.
Just a moment later, an employee came over to sit down on the chair and read to other kids — and apparently lost track of Leonardo, who suffocated under the weight of the employee.
After approximately 15 minutes, employees notice he was missing, and eventually found him and rushed him to the hospital — but it was too late for Leonardo. Police believe he died under that beanbag chair.
Danielle Sanchez, the boy’s mother, spoke to reporters, saying:
“I’m so confused on how you don’t know where my kid is. How do you not feel him? How do you not hear him scream?”
She sounded understandably distraught after this unimaginable, ridiculous tragedy, as she continued:
“I dropped him off at daycare not realizing I would never be able to hold him again. Somebody dropped the ball and now we’re going to have to bury a boy because of that.”
Truly a parent’s worst nightmare.
According to a media finding, this daycare has been cited twice in the last five years for a lack of supervision, as well as for a hole in their fence where authorities felt a child could have escaped.
So, so sad.
