Essential oils have a wide array of uses, including keeping out insects and other creatures that are often found in and around the house and yard. Not only is this a humane alternative to the standard store-bought repellants, it leaves your home smelling fresh. The properties of essential oils, such as lemongrass, citronella, cedar wood, bergamot, eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, and pennyroyal, aid in repelling bugs and other critters. While they can be used alone, certain combinations of the oils repel specific pests.
Place a handful of dried cloves into a bowl and add a few drops of citronella, clove, lavender, or peppermint oil. Place the bowl in an area of the home that flies tend to congregate. Be sure to add more of the essential oil of choice on a regular basis to maintain the potency.
Add a couple of drops of eucalyptus, peppermint, or spearmint oil to cotton balls, and place them in the areas where you believe the mice are inhabiting, such as behind appliances and in the attic or garage. This should discourage them from entering your home.
Add a few drops of citronella oil to a handful of cotton balls, and place them inside cabinets or underneath sinks. This oil may be used alone, or with a combination of peppermint or lemongrass oil. These soaked cotton balls can be placed in areas like under a sink or inside of cupboards.
Scatter drops of peppermint oil in the kitchen, bathroom, or other areas of the home frequented by this insect.
