The Tale Of The 40 Year Old Twinkie

Back in 1976 – yes Gerald Ford was president – a student in Maine at private George Stevens Academy in coastal Maine asked his chemistry teacher, Roger Bennatti, a very important question: just what is the shelf life of a Twinkie.  Bennatti, being a teacher who believes in experiments and demonstration, sent his students to the store with some cash and an assignment: get a Twinkie so we can figure out how long it will last.  He opened the package and put the Twinkie on the chalkboard.  It didn’t decay.

Fast forward 40 years…Bennatti retired, but according to reports from ABC News, the Twinkie is still going strong.  It is currently in the office of the Dean of Students at George Steven Academy, Libby Rosemeier, under glass.  The experiment is not over.

Yes, just like everyone else, I love a good Twinkie but had to give them up.

Rosemeier is not sure who will inherit the Twinkie when she retires to continue the experiment.  Let’s just hope no one tries to test it’s freshness.
