People Are Beating Up on this Bass Pro Shop Santa and He Could Get Fired

The family of a 13-month-old baby with a genetic brain and muscle disorder has received a formal apology from Bass Pro Shops, days after the family said their store Santa refused to be photographed holding their son on his lap.

This happened Friday afternoon at Bass Pro Shops in San Antonio. Megan Self said she unhooked her son Caleb from his breathing apparatus and other medical equipment, after waiting in line for a free picture with Santa Claus. Self admits Santa was willing to take a pic with Caleb, but only standing, so he could quickly hand off the child, to its parents. Caleb has been diagnosed with Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy.

It’s another case of political correctness run amok. 13 month old Caleb Self suffers from a rare brain and muscle disorder. His mother Megan unhooked Caleb from his breathing apparatus and other medical equipment for a free picture with Santa Claus. Santa however, didn’t feel comfortable with the child in his lap, and offered a pic holding Caleb, but standing (so he could hold him better). The parents are now freaking out, claiming they’ve been scarred and insulted since they were denied a traditional Christmas pic with their child on Santa’s lap, like every other child.

Don’t they see that CALEB ISN’T LIKE EVERY OTHER CHILD? The Bass Pro Shop Santa is NOT a doctor. A limp child “unhooked” from its breathing apparatus, for a pic? The Santa was understandably concerned, and probably didn’t want to further risk the boy’s health. Bass Pro shop has put out a news release, which mentions Store Santas going through “sensitivity training,” they’re also offering the family free things and apologizing, when maybe – just maybe, they should be standing behind their employee.

OMG, what the hell is wrong with people? from what I read santa acted caring and concerned. don’t forget, it was the first time he ever met this child and was probably nervous as to how to handle him. parents should be ashamed of themselves.

I don’t think that the santa did anything wrong, He was understandably concerned about the babys well being and I think that he was trying to get the pic done as quickly as possible

I think this is a beautiful picture of Santa and Caleb. I am sure that Santa was doing what he thought was best for the baby.

Maybe Bass Pro Shop needs to look out for Santa and be glad they have someone putting the child’s well being first. There is people just out to fuss complain and sue because they were treated different.. If something was to have happened to that baby they would have blamed Santa too?

I agree. I think it is a beautiful picture. I don’t understand what the big deal is. I think Santa was just being careful after seeing the child being unhooked from oxygen. Parents are overreacting.

Greedy, self-centered parents. They should have been happy that Santa was concerned about their child enough to value his welfare by standing up and holding the baby. He could have said no due to possibility of harming the baby. Grow up parents. Or better yet, have no more babies, apparently you don’t know how to deal with things.
Companies are wasting time and money on this sort of BS. Sensitivity training is mostly due to PC crap. In this case it isn’t needed. Medical training about kids maybe, but other stuff is BS.

Beautiful picture with Santa. They should be more concerned with the safety of their child. I can’t believe they unhooked him from his oxygen! Parents should be reported for child neglect, not given free stuff!!!

Hey, I’ve got a great idea – bring the parents back and have them keep the kid fully connected to all the life-saving medical devices, and have the picture taken on Santa’s lap that way. What’s that? The parents don’t want to see all those medical devices in the picture? Why? Because it reminds them of their kid’s special needs?

It seems to me that Mom should take the log out of her own eye before pointing a finger at the speck in Santa’s eye.

That headline is bogus. Except for one or two ignorant people, everyone is siding with Santa. Me included. Bless Santa for what he does.

I’m confused by the title of your article. I have seen NO comments beating up on the Santa or even taking the parent’s side. What gives?

Why wouldn’t they want a picture of their child with the breathing apparatus on? It’s safer for the child, and that is their child’s natural state. We all live with many different issues. Pretending your child is other than it is can not really be helpful. And blaming this poor man for worrying about the child is insane.

Is this a case of a woman trying to get free stuff? I think he was concerned about how to hold him properly. Geez! He just watched her unhook the child’s breathing tube!! I would be worried too. Get a grip lady and give him a break!

When people are suffering a tragedy like the one these parents are undergoing, it can be difficult to be patient. Santa had a right to be concerned about the child. He had a right to ask questions. I don’t think he had a right to override the parents’ view of what was best for their particular child. They clearly believed that the child would be fine for the duration of the photo. How many seconds does it take to snap a pic and return a child to the parents? Not too many, unless needless obstacles are created. Santa didn’t have the expertise to determine that following the parent’s’ wishes would harm the child. It appears to me as if Santa might have been uncomfortable with a child whose had medical apparatus and special needs issues to contend with. That’s understandable. Refusing to sit for a quick photo is not.

He did not refuse to sit with this child. They never asked for a sitting photo and didn’t complain until much later. Santa was (rightly) worried about how long the child was unhooked from oxygen. I hope this family doesn’t try to take this into court. They’ll lose.
