Australian mom-of-two Sandra Tanrikulu posted a video of her newest baby in the hospital. At just five weeks old, the baby contracted whooping cough. The terrified Tanrikulu and her husband so much that Tanrikulu decided to share the upsetting video in hopes other parents would take heed of what can happen when you don’t vaccinate.
“This video may distress some people but I’m sharing to show just how scary and dangerous whooping cough is to babies who are too young to be vaccinated,” she begins. She then explains how the more silent episodes of pertussis are even more dangerous: “The scary symptom for babies is when they don’t cough but silently choke and turn blue/purple from lack of oxygen. If we weren’t in hospital and sitting watching our baby 24/7 the outcome would be fatal.”
“Please don’t ignore the warning signs — our baby girl only had a slight cough to start. Please share this to educate more people on the importance of vaccinations,” she concludes.
The CDC encourages women to get the pertussis vaccine in the third trimester of each of their pregnancies in order to protect babies from the cough and to have babies vaccinated for the infection as well.
