There are a lot of blow dryers out there, and each one has more hair benefits than the next (supposedly). But Dyson, the same company that brings you some of the best vacuums and bathroom hand dryers, is entering the beauty business with a new, innovative launch—the Supersonic Hair Dryer. First of all, it looks totally different than any other hot tool you’ve seen. It’s got a big hole in the center to start, just like their hot and cool fan. But there’s also some pretty innovative technology behind the sleek look as well.
That empty space is actually the patented Air Multiplier, which sucks in air from the surrounding area and pushes it out at a higher speed. Just like your average dryer, there are three speed settings and four heat settings. Plus, a cold shot button that you don’t have to hold down, how cool is that, right? Another fancy upgrade is the internal temperature gauge that ensures the air never gets too hot, so you won’t scorch or dry out your strands while trying to get a sleek blowout. And you know that issue with plastic attachments burning your fingers off? Solved. The Dyson engineering team (geniuses) found out how keep the attachments cool to the touch. Plus everything is magnetic, including the concentrator nozzle and diffuser additions.
Perhaps the most exciting factor is just how light weight it is. The motor inside the handle is three times lighter than the average blow dryer engine. So, it won’t feel like you’ve been lifting weights after using it. This makes it perfect for hairstylist who tend to have sore arms after completing a blow out. And it’s quieter than average. The “supersonic” moniker comes from the fact that certain tones in the motor go beyond what adult humans can hear. That means you won’t have to yell over it in the bathroom.
If all of this sounds super techy to you, it’s because it totally is. But this new hairdryer also has the celebrity stylist seal of approval. Jen Atkin—who has worked with celebrities like Khloé Kardashian, Sofia Vergara, and Jessica Alba—has signed on to be the US Ambassador for the launch. “I’m blow-drying all day long, and the fact it weighs so little is a dream come true,” Atkin told Allure. “Honestly, it’s so good, I was really bummed I didn’t design it myself.” The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer will be available this September at Sephora and on Dyson’s website for $399. I will admit, it is a pretty penny to spend but it is life changing for the hair game, especially if you’re a hairstylist or your signature look is a blow out.
